Build legal flashcards you can grade honestly, maintain accurately, and connect to exam practice.
Disclosure: We build AnkiQuiz, the optional quiz tool described below. The invented rule in this guide is a study exercise, not governing law. AI-generated questions require source checking.
A law-school Anki card needs a clear question, a checkable answer, and enough context to know which rule applies. Copying a case brief onto the back of a card usually creates a harder problem: what counts as remembering it?
This guide is for U.S. law students building cards from verified course materials. Use it alongside the law school Anki workflow, especially when finals are approaching and every new note creates future reviews.
Decide what deserves a flashcard
Start from a topic you understand in your outline. Ask what you need to retrieve without rereading the explanation: a rule framework, an exception's trigger, a distinction between neighboring doctrines, or a fact that changes the analysis.
Keep the outline as the subject map. A card can retain one part of that map, but hundreds of disconnected answers may hide the sequence in which questions should be asked. Return to the outline when the relationship between cards becomes unclear.
Case names and procedural histories deserve cards when your professor expects them or they explain a doctrinal boundary. Do not turn every assigned case into a fixed number of cards. Let the course objectives and feedback determine the target.
Use a note structure that preserves scope
A practical note can contain these fields:
- Prompt: the exact retrieval task, including the governing framework when needed.
- Answer: the minimum complete response you will grade.
- Explanation: why the answer follows and the important limitation.
- Source: course, assigned authority, page or section, and relevant date or version.
- Scope: jurisdiction, course assumption, or examination framework.
For example, tags such as law::contracts::formation and course::fall-2026 can help you find related notes. Tags are organizational choices, not proof of legal accuracy. Put scope in readable fields as well, especially if you later select fields for quiz generation.
When authorities conflict, resolve the conflict before memorizing a single answer. If the course requires competing approaches, label them and test the distinction explicitly.
A worked example using an invented classroom rule
For this exercise only, assume Rule S requires a written cancellation delivered within five days of enrollment. An exception allows cancellation within ten days when the provider failed to deliver a required notice. Ignore other possible rules. This fictional rule lets us practice card design without asserting actual consumer law.
Weak front: Explain cancellation.
Weak back: The entire rule, its exception, a class discussion, and a long example.
That prompt does not identify the required response. You could remember the five-day period and overlook the notice exception while still feeling successful.
Card 1: retrieve the default and its scope
Front: Under exercise Rule S, what form, delivery requirement, and default deadline apply to cancellation?
Back: A written cancellation must be delivered within five days of enrollment, subject to the notice exception.
Keep the elements together when the target is the complete default requirement. Splitting every word into a separate cloze would make the sentence easy without testing the framework.
Card 2: retrieve the exception trigger
Front: Under exercise Rule S, what fact changes the cancellation window from five to ten days?
Back: The provider failed to deliver the required notice.
This tests the condition that changes the result. Keep the source and explanation on the note so a later edit does not turn it into an unsupported universal rule.
Card 3: connect a fact to the rule
Front: Under exercise Rule S, a written cancellation is delivered on day eight. What notice fact must you check before deciding whether it is timely?
Back: Whether the provider delivered the required notice. Without that notice, the ten-day exception applies; otherwise the default is five days.
This is a narrow application card. It does not establish that you can analyze a long exam problem. Next, change the facts or combine the issue with another verified topic in separate practice.
Avoid cloze cards that reveal the answer
A sentence with one missing number can become a test of visual familiarity. Ask whether the surrounding wording tells you the answer without requiring the rule. If it does, replace the cloze with a direct question or hide the complete retrieval target.
For a difficult multi-part test, keep a framework card and add focused cards only for components you repeatedly miss. Avoid both extremes: a page-long answer and a pile of fragments that never asks for the complete test.
When two cards sound nearly identical, add the distinguishing condition to their prompts. If their answers differ because of jurisdiction or procedural posture, make that difference visible before reveal.
Grade against the required answer
Before reviewing, decide which components are essential. If a card requires three elements and you omit one, treat the answer as incomplete. If every lapse feels debatable, rewrite the card instead of inventing a new grading standard each day.
Anki's official studying guide explains the answer buttons. Use Again when you failed to retrieve the required answer. Hard means you recalled it with difficulty. Revealing a familiar paragraph and recognizing it is not the same as producing the answer.
For repeated failures, inspect understanding, wording, and interference. Sometimes the next step is rereading the source and explaining the distinction aloud, followed by a better card. More repetitions of an ambiguous question will not make its target clearer.
Use practice feedback to edit cards
After a short practice problem, identify the smallest repair. A missing element may justify a card edit. A forgotten relationship may justify a framework prompt. A conclusory paragraph calls for writing practice.
Georgetown Law's exam-writing guidance recommends evaluating practice answers with professor feedback. Use that comparison to check whether your cards support the work your examination rewards.
Search before adding a new card. If an existing note tests the same lesson, improve it. Keep new-card intake small enough that you can still outline and work through unfamiliar facts.
Select complete source text for AnkiQuiz
AnkiQuiz can provide an optional differently worded question from selected card text. Select the prompt, answer, and necessary explanation and scope. Verify in the selected fields that the model receives the qualification you want tested; a tag or an unselected field is not a substitute for supplied context.
For the Rule S exercise, include both the default and exception. Then ask for a question that distinguishes them. Inspect the generated explanation against the fictional supplied rule before attempting to learn from it.
Treat unsupported exceptions and mixed frameworks as generation errors. AnkiQuiz does not certify legal accuracy or grade a full legal essay. See the quiz setup guide for field selection, and avoid uploading restricted course content or confidential client material.
Check whether the repaired cards help
After revising a note, answer it again after a delay, then try an unfamiliar problem without the original wording. Track whether the original error recurs. A better card should make the target clearer and recall more reliable; a stronger practice answer supplies separate evidence about application.
If your cards are consistently correct but exam answers still miss issues, use the issue-spotting workflow. If you are moving into licensing preparation, audit the same notes with the bar exam Anki guide.
Frequently asked questions
What should go on a law school Anki card?
Use a focused prompt, a minimum complete answer, a short explanation, and source and scope information. Make the governing framework clear before revealing the answer.
Should I use cloze cards for legal rules?
Cloze cards can help when they test a meaningful target. Replace prompts that reveal the answer through sentence structure, and retain a framework card when the complete test matters.
Should I memorize every case with Anki?
Choose case details when your professor requires them or they clarify a doctrinal boundary. Do not automatically convert every case brief into a large review queue.
Which fields should I select for AnkiQuiz law questions?
Select the text containing the prompt, answer, necessary qualifications, explanation, and framework. Check that the supplied fields support the question, then verify the generated output against the source.
